Maa Ki Dal

Ingredients

Today we will be cooking a simple Indian food recipe called Daal. Daal is a dish of boiled lentils and it is one of the most popular dishes in India and Pakistani cuisine. This recipe is very simple and easy to make. It can be cooked with many ingredients but today we will use a few for simplicity.

 

 For Cooking The Dal:

 1: channa dal 300g (split chick peas) (washed & soaked in water for 4 to 5 hours)

 2: mash dal 300g (with skin) (split black gram) (washed & soaked in water for4 to 5 hours)

 3: onions 1 large (finely chopped)

 4: ginger 3 inch (crushed)

 5: green chilli 4 (crushed)

 6: salt 1 tsp

 7: turmeric 1/2 tsp

 8: water 7 cups

 

 For Tempering Dal:

 1: clarified butter 1/2 cup (desi ghee)

 2: cumin seeds 2 tsp

 3: garlic 15 cloves (chopped)

 4: ginger 1 inch (crushed)

 5: onions 2 medium (finely sliced)

 6: tomatoes 3 medium (chopped)

 7: green chilli 3 (chopped)

 8: coriander powder 1 tbsp (heaped)

 9: red chilli powder 2 tsp

10: salt 1 & 1/2 tsp

11: water 1 cup

12: garam masala powder 1 tsp

13: fresh coriander hand full

Instructions

  1.  1: wash both dal and soak in water for 4 hours, then place both dal in a pressure cooker with onions, ginger, green chilli, salt, turmeric, water mix and lock the pressure cooker and cook for 25 minutes once the weight on the lid starts to move time the cooking (and if cooking in a pot cook till the chana dal is mashed and tender completely).

     2: heat clarified butter add cumin seeds, ginger, garlic fry on high flame till gets a little golden.

     3: now add onions and fry on high flame till the onions get golden.

     4: add tomatoes,  green chilli, coriander powder, salt, red chilli powder, water mix well and cook on medium flame till the tomatoes reduce and ghee comes on surface.

     5: now add the cooked dal, garam masala powder mix well and simmer on low flame for 8 to 10 minutes.

     6: add fresh coriander mix.

     7: serve hot with roti, paratha, boiled rice.
